OXFORD, Miss. - Agnes Muzamel of the No. 7 nationally-ranked Ole Miss women's tennis team was named to the All-Southeastern Conference second team as the conference awards were announced Thursday.
This is the third year in a row for Muzamel to be named All-SEC second team. The first team is selected by the player with the best record at each position, while the second team is based on at-large selections.
"I am very proud of Agnes and her ongoing commitment to excellence here at Ole Miss," Head Coach Jerry Montgomery said. "She represents us well and is a very hard worker. I am excited about the upcoming NCAAs and the great opportunity it provides for her to make an impact in the team event as well as the individual championships."
Muzamel, a two-time All-America, is currently ranked 13th in the nation with a 27-11 overall record, 13-8 at the No. 1 position. She is also ranked No. 8 in doubles with Courtenay Chapman. Muzamel ended the 1997 campaign ranked No. 2 in the nation in singles and No. 3 in doubles with Courtenay Chapman. Muzamel reached the finals of the National Clay Court Championships this year, and has advanced to at least the quarterfinals in six grand slam events during her career.
Off the court, Muzamel made the 1998 SEC Academic Honor Roll with a 3.62 grade point average in Political Science and is a member of the Dean's Honor Roll.
Muzamel is one of three players in the history of Ole Miss women's tennis to earn All-SEC honors three times in her career. Four-time All-America Paloma Collantes received All-SEC accolades all four years of her career, while Marie-Laure Bougnol was selected three times. Ole Miss has had a total of 26 athletes named All-SEC since 1983 and Muzamel's selection makes it the eighth consecutive year that a Lady Rebel has made the All-SEC team.
