Rebel Netters Hold Off UALR, 5-2

OXFORD, Miss. - The No. 4 nationally-ranked Ole Miss men's tennis team held off Arkansas-Little Rock 5-2 Tuesday at the Women's Sports Complex. The Rebels improved to 4-0 on the season, while the Trojans dropped to 4-1.

Ole Miss took the doubles point for the early 1-0 lead. Anders Stenman and Ben Cousins downed Domenica Marra and Luciano Diez 8-2 at No. 3 doubles and then Martin Sjoqvist and James Shortall defeated Felipe McCluskey and Danny Iniesta 8-4 to clinch the point.

In singles, UALR made things interesting at the beginning, posting wins at the No. 2 and 3 slots to go ahead 2-1 in the match. Rebel freshman Martin Selin won the first set against Marra 6-2 and then lost the second and third sets 6-3, 6-3 at the third spot. At No. 2 singles, Stenman split sets with Iniesta before succumbing in the third set 6-4, 4-6, 6-1.

Ole Miss evened the match as Shortall came back to beat McCluskey at No. 1 singles, 6-7, 6-4, 6-2 and then Sjoqvist posted a 7-6(4), 6-2 win over Meriano Pettigrosso at No. 4 singles to give the Rebels a 3-2 lead.

Vikrant Chada, playing in his first dual match this season, downed UALR's Diez 6-3, 6-2 at the sixth spot to clinch the match for the Rebels.

Ole Miss now faces its toughest test of the early season in No. 3 Mississippi State, Thursday in Jackson, Miss. The two will meet for the second annual River Hills Mississippi Cup at 5:00 p.m. at the Rivers Hills Tennis Club.
