Rebel Netters Defeat Kentucky, 5-2

LEXINGTON, Ky. - The 14th-ranked Ole Miss men's tennis team won the doubles point and four of the six singles matches to defeat 32nd-ranked Kentucky 5-2 Thursday afternoon at the Hillary J. Boone outdoor tennis courts. With the win, the Rebels improve to 15-3 overall, 7-1 in the SEC.
Ole Miss got the early 1-0 lead by winning the doubles point, with wins at No. 1 and 2 doubles. James Shortall and Martin Sjoqvist downed Johan Hesoun and Patrik Johansson 8-3 at the top spot and then Vikrant Chadha and Anders Stenman held off Tomas Smid and Edo Bawano 8-5 for the point.
Head coach Billy Chadwick switched the lineup at the top two positions with Sjoqvist getting the nod at No. 1 singles and Shortall playing No. 2 singles. Shortall downed Hesoun 6-3, 6-1 to improve to 10-7 in dual matches.
Chadha defeated Kentucky's Smid 6-3, 7-5 at No 3 singles. Rebel freshman Martin Selin won in straight sets over Edo Bawono at No. 5 singles to give the Rebels the victory. Kristofer Stahlberg won his match 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 against Kentucky's Johan Grunditz, as the two freshmen continue to dominate at the bottom of the lineup. Both are now a combined 24-3 overall and 13-3 in the SEC at five and six singles.
Kentucky's wins came at No.1 and 4 singles. Carlos Drada, ranked 33rd in the nation, came back to beat Sjoqvist 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 and Gustav Pousette defeated Ole Miss' Stenman 7-6, 6-1 for the Wildcat's other win.
The Rebels continue their road trip Saturday at Vanderbilt in a 10:00 a.m. match.
