Ole Miss to Celebrate National Student-Athlete Day

OXFORD, Miss. - Hundreds of events around the nation will mark Tuesday, April 6 as the 12th annual National STUDENT-Athlete Day, including activities sponsored by the University of Mississippi. Ole Miss is sponsoring its first annual National STUDENT-Athlete Day program.
This program is designed to recognize student-athletes for the academic achievements and community service involvement. The keynote speaker for the program will be Mr. Larry Martindale from Atlanta, Ga. Mr. Martindale is a former Rebel basketball player and a successful businessman.
John Shafer, Director of Athletics at Ole Miss, said: "I want to thank Mr. Martindale for being involved in this special program. I also want to congratulate all our student-athletes who have taken on the enormous task of seeking both academic and athletic excellence. They are special to Ole Miss."
National STUDENT-Athlete Day honors student-athletes and the network of parents, coaches, teachers and school systems who make it possible or young people to strike a balance between academic and athletic achievement. The day, established by Northeastern University's Center for the Study of Sport Society, is co-sponsored by the National Consortium for Academics and Sports, the NCAA and the National Federation of State High School Associations.
Richard Lapchick, Director of the Center for the Study of Sport in Society, said: "For its 12th anniversary, National STUDENT-Athlete Day continues to demonstrate all that is positive in the achievements of student-athletes."
