No. 6 Men's Tennis Down Auburn 6-1

AUBURN, Ala. - The No. 6 nationally-ranked Ole Miss men's tennis team proved to much for 47th-ranked Auburn downing the Tigers 6-1 Tuesday afternoon at the Luther Young Tennis Center. The Rebels improve to 9-2 overall and 2-0 in the SEC.

Ole Miss jumped out to an early 1-0 lead by sweeping all three doubles matches. Sixth-ranked James Shortall and Martin Sjoqvist downed George Matijasevic and Tiago Ruffoni 8-3 at No.1 doubles. The two have now won 12 in a row. Vikrant Chadha and Anders Stenman clinched the point with a 8-3 win over Mark Kovacs and Marcel Mizerski at No. 2 doubles.

Four of Ole Miss' singles players are nationally-ranked and it showed as they won in straight sets. At No. 1 singles Shortall, ranked No. 22 in the nation, defeated Matijasevic 6-3, 7-5. Sjoqvist, ranked 75th, downed Ruffoni 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2 singles and Chadha held off Mark Kovacs 7-5, 7-6 at the No.3 position.

Stenman, ranked 67th, cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 win over Mizerski at the fourth spot and 49th-ranked Martin Selin beat Estevan Strecker 7-6, 6-2 at No. 5 singles. Auburn's only point came at No. 6 singles, where Peter McGuone handed Rebel Kristofer Stahlberg his first loss of the season, a 6-3, 6-1 defeat.

"We played great doubles," head coach Billy Chadwick said. "We have been playing some good doubles the last several matches. Auburn was a quarterfinalist at the NCAA Championships last year, so we knew it would be a tough match. The guys responded to the challenge. It is especially nice to start off our four-match road trip with two wins as tough as this league is."

The Rebels return to action Thursday at No. 28 Alabama.
