Men's Tennis Defeats South Carolina, 5-2

SEATTLE - The No. 4 nationally-ranked Ole Miss men's tennis team defeated ninth-ranked South Carolina 5-2, Saturday at the USTA/ITA National Team Indoor Championships to finish tied for fifth in the tournament. The Rebels improve to 6-2 on the year.

It marks the fourth time in the last five years, that the Rebels have finished fifth or better at the USTA/ITA National Team Indoor, a tournament which features 16 of the nation's top teams. Ole Miss posted a 2-1 record, edging 16th-ranked Harvard 4-3 in the opening round and then losing a close one (4-3) to 1998 Finalist Illinois (tied for fifth nationally) in the quarterfinals.

Ole Miss won the doubles point for the third day in a row. James Shortall and Martin Sjoqvist won all three of their matches including two wins over top 10 teams at the National Team Indoor. They defeated Jerome Jourdon and Vladimir Pavicevic 8-5 and Vikrant Chada and Anders Stenman beat Olof Akesson and Guillaume Legat 8-4 at No. 2 doubles for the point. In singles, Ole Miss' Shortall defeated Pavicevic 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 at the top spot. Martin Selin posted a huge win knocking off 10th-ranked Guillaume Legat in straight sets 6-4, 6-2 at No. 3 singles.

Chada downed Juan Gamboa 6-0, 6-2 at No. 5 singles and Kristofer Stahlberg handed Tomasz Wawrzyniak a 6-4, 6-1 loss at the No. 6 position for the fifth point. Stahlberg continues to be a rock at the No. 6 spot for the Rebels as he is 5-0 at the No. 6 position and 7-0 overall.

The Rebels return to action March 2 when they host Samford at 2:00 p.m. at the Palmer/Salloum Tennis Center.
