Men's Tennis Competes in ASU Thunderbird Invitational

TEMPE, Ariz. - Martin Sjoqvist of the Ole Miss men's tennis team advanced to the quarterfinals at the Arizona State Thunderbird Invitational Thursday. Anders Stenman posted a solid win in the first round before losing, while freshman Martin Selin lost in the first round.

Sjoqvist, ranked No. 25 in the nation and seeded second in the tournament, defeated Stephen Patak of Texas 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 in the first round and then downed Brian Patterson of Notre Dame 6-2, 6-4 in the round of 16. He will face David Hodge of Baylor, who upset Illinois' Oliver Freelove (fifth-seed) in the second round.

Stenman upset Ignacio Hirigoyen of SMU, who was seeded fourth and is ranked 29th in the preseason rankings. He lost the first set 6-1 and then rebounded to shutdown Hirigoyen 6-2, 6-0 in the second and third sets. In the second round, Stenman lost a three-setter to 68th-ranked Efe Unstundag of Rice, 6-4, 1-6, 6-3.
