Martin Sjoqvist Falls in Three Sets at Thunderbird Invitational

TEMPE, Ariz. - Martin Sjoqvist of the Ole Miss men's tennis team lost a tough three-setter to Efe Ustundag of Rice in the singles final at the Arizona State Thunderbird Invitational Saturday. Freshman Martin Selin captured the consolation title.
Sjoqvist, who was seeking his first collegiate title, won the first set 6-4, but Ustundag took the second and third sets 6-2, 6-4. Sjoqvist, ranked No. 25 in the nation, only lost two sets in the entire tournament. He will now prepare for the All-American Championships next weekend in Austin, Texas.
It marked the second time in the last three years, for an Ole Miss player to reach the finals at the Thunderbird Invitational, as former All-American Sebastien DeChaunac won the singles title in 1996.
In the consolation final, Selin rallied from a set down to beat Robert Collins, also of Rice, 2-6, 6-2, 6-0. Selin, after losing in the first round of the tournament, came and back won four matches to improve his record to 4-3 overall.
