January 24, 1999
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - James Shortall of the Ole Miss men's tennis team advanced to the semifinals in singles at the SEC Indoor Championships Sunday, and teamed with Martin Sjoqvist to advance to the doubles final. Shortall will meet fourth-seeded Francisco Rodriguez of Alabama in the semifinals at 9:00 a.m. Monday, while the doubles final will be played after the singles final.
Shortall seeded 13th, rallied from a set down to defeat the sixth seed, Mark Way of Tennessee 3-6, 7-6(0), 7-5 in the round of 16. In the quarterfinals Shortall handed LSU's Tom Hand a straight set loss 6-4, 6-2 to win his 20th match of the year. He is now 20-4 and becomes the first Rebel to reach the 20-win plateau this season.
With his win, Shortall continues a string of success at the SEC Indoor for the Rebels. Since 1993, the Rebels have had a player in the semifinals of the singles and have won the title three of the last four years. Shortall and Sjoqvist defeated Marco Baron and Matthieu Ballay of Mississippi State 8-6 in the quarterfinals and then knocked off the No. 2 seeds Peter Handoyo and Mark Way of Tennessee 9-8(4) to advance to the final. If Shortall and Sjoqvist defeat the No. 1 seeded team of Rodriguez and Ariel Rivero (Alabama), they will become the second Rebel duo to capture the SEC Indoor doubles title, as former All-Americans Joakim Appelqvist and Ali Hamadeh won it in 1994. In addition, it would be the Rebels fifth SEC Indoor title in six years.
