Dempsey McGuigan enters his eighth year on staff with Ole Miss track & field in 2025-26, his 11th as a part of the program, and his third as an assistant coach working alongside head coach Connie Price-Smith and throws coach John Smith.
Since 2024, McGuigan has joined forces with Smith to win four NCAA titles and 11 SEC titles, with an incredible 80 NCAA points and 213 SEC points scored in those two seasons. Specifically with his duties with the hammer groups, McGuigan has helped orchestrate two of the best single-season scoring performances in SEC history, with the Rebel men notching 23 and 24 points across 2024 and 2025, respectively.
McGuigan served as a coordinator of operations across the 2022-23 school year before being made an assistant coach the summer of 2023. McGuigan has worked in multiple capacities with the Rebel track & field program, serving as a graduate manager from 2020-22, an undergraduate manager from 2018-20, a volunteer coach in 2018, and he served as interim throws coach during the 2022 outdoor campaign.
McGuigan has mentored under two of the top throws coaches worldwide in Ole Miss' John Smith and his childhood hammer coach Alan Bertram of Scotland, who coached more than 70 UK hammer champions across various age groups throughout his career. McGuigan was first coached by John Smith upon his arrival to Oxford in 2015, and then mentored as Smith's volunteer coach and stand-in throughout the next several years.
As a Rebel, McGuigan was a two-time All-American and set Ole Miss records in the weight throw indoors (21.11m/69-03.25) and hammer outdoors (70.55m/231-05) during his collegiate career from 2014-18. McGuigan, a native of London, has extensive experience on the international circuit as well, competing for the Irish national team at the European Youth Championships, European Junior Championships, the World Junior Championships, the European U23 Championships and the European Team Championships. Additionally, McGuigan has competed for Northern Ireland twice at the Commonwealth Games in 2014 and 2018, where he made the men's hammer final in both trips.
McGuigan owns three degrees from Ole Miss: a bachelor's in multi-disciplinary studies in 2018, a bachelor's in business in 2020, and his master's in sport administration in 2022.
