Men’s Track & Field Punches Three National Tickets

5/29/2026 | Track and Field

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Ole Miss men's track & field booked three qualifying berths to the NCAA Championships, including an impressive double by sophomore Jordan Urrutia, on the third day of the 2026 NCAA East First Round on Friday.

All-American senior and reigning NCAA Outdoor high jump champion Arvesta Troupe was the first Rebel to punch his national ticket on Friday, beginning his title defense in earnest following a smooth performance. Troupe was clean over all three bars he attempted, eventually tying for the prelim lead at 2.16m/7-1.

Last June, Troupe became the first athlete in Ole Miss history to win a national high jump title, and he will enter his final meet as a Rebel looking to add on to his three career All-America awards and 16 total NCAA points scored.

Ole Miss booked its return trip in the 4x100-meter relay after the Rebel men snagged a time qualifier ticket to Oregon. The foursome of Dekell Minor, Jordan Urrutia, Wesley Todd and Tarique Wright passed the stick in 38.87, finishing fourth in a blazing third heat but still running fast enough to earn one of the three time qualifier berths.

That time would have been a new school record two weeks ago if not for the same quartet's 38.65 fifth-place finish at the SEC Championship, the best by an Ole Miss relay since 2011. This Rebel team – the first in school history to break 39 seconds – have not run slower than 39.20 in five attempts this season, all faster than the school record a year ago at this time (39.34). This marks the first consecutive national qualifying berths in the men's 4x100 at Ole Miss since 2014-15.

This was just the beginning of a busy day for Urrutia, who was attempting the 100/200/4x1 triple after advancing in first round action on Wednesday.

About 90 minutes after the relay, Urrutia ran the best 100-meter of his career at 10.14 (-0.1) but fell two hundredths of a second shy of his first individual NCAA ticket as the 13th-place finisher.

But roughly an hour later, Urrutia would take care of business in the 200-meter quarterfinals. Urrutia was the second-place finisher in the first heat at a wind-legal PR of 20.34 (+0.9), good for an AQ spot to Eugene for the national meet – the first in the 200 on the men's side at Ole Miss since Olympian Isiah Young's NCAA runner-up finish in 2013.

The Rebels also had a handful of painfully close misses on Friday. Sophomore Max Armstrong missed out on his first national meet by less than two tenths of a second in the 800-meter quarterfinals, finishing one spot short in 13th at 1:46.67. Armstrong wraps his sophomore season already as one of the best 800-meter runners at Ole Miss, entering his junior season fourth all-time at his PR 1:46.06 from the SEC Outdoor Championships two weeks ago.

Freshman Ashton Hearn was 13th in the discus, falling two feet shy of Oregon as the first one out at 57.03m/187-1. Junior Sterling Scott had a narrower miss in the triple jump, missing by a heartbreaking 2.25 inches at 15.77m/51-9 (+0.3).

Ole Miss closed the night with its first regional 4x400-meter relay since 2014. The quartet of Wesley Todd, Carson Turner, Cade Flatt and Max Armstrong ran the mile relay in 3:06.52 – good for No. 10 in school history outdoors.

Also competing on Friday were: sophomore Sergio Del Barrio in the 3000-meter steeplechase (33rd, 9:03.16); Kyle Johnson in the triple jump; and seniors Aiden Britt (22nd, 14:05.76) and Kidus Misgina (26th, 14:10.58) in the 5K, the final races of their excellent Rebel careers.

Ole Miss closes its stay at the NCAA East Regional on Saturday, with the Rebel women beginning their final day of competition at 4 p.m. CT in the 4x100-meter relay.
