Track & Field Sets Men’s Program Record for NCAA Outdoor Entries

5/30/2025 | Track and Field

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Ole Miss men's track & field put together a spectacular final day of competition, scoring four more entries to the national meet to break the all-time men's program record at Day Three of the NCAA East Regional on Friday.

The Rebels scored five total national tickets on Friday across both men's and women's competition, but the story of the day was the steadily-increasing national roster for the Ole Miss men. With men's competition now concluded, the Rebels end with 11 national entries from 13 total athletes – breaking the previous records of 10 entries set in 1984 and 10 athletes in 2015.

Ole Miss' men's 4x100-meter relay put together its second-fastest performance ever two weeks ago at the SEC Championships, scoring their first points since 2019 and falling just four hundredths of a second shy of the school record. The Rebels left no doubt on Friday, taking down the 2014 record by nearly two tenths of a second – and punching Ole Miss' first national ticket in the event since 2015 in the process.

The Rebel foursome of senior Iangelo Atkinstall-Daley, freshman Jordan Urrutia, freshman Wesley Todd and junior Joseph Michel passed the stick in a blazing 39.11, which earned them an auto-qualifier spot to Oregon for the national meet as the second-place finisher in the second heat.

This marks only the fifth total national qualifying berth in the men's 4x100-meter relay in Ole Miss history, joining prior relay teams in 1984, 2002, 2014 and 2015.

For Atkinstall-Daley, his leadoff leg was made even more impressive by the fact that hours earlier he finished 15th in the men's triple jump at a season-best 15.64m/51-03.75 (-1.3) – falling just three spots shy of his second consecutive national ticket in the event. Michel also pulled double-duty on Friday, finishing 21st in the 100-meter dash quarterfinals roughly one hour after the relay at 10.30 (-0.2).

Ole Miss earned two more crucial national berths on the track at the close of competition Friday in the men's 5K semifinals. Senior Toby Gillen – fresh off a superb conference meet that saw him win the SEC 5K crown – earned the fifth and final auto qualifier to Oregon in the first heat at 14:08.45. In the next heat, fellow senior Kidus Misgina followed suit, finishing fifth for the final AQ at 13:54.94.

Gillen and Misgina are the first Rebel duo to qualify in the men's 5K simultaneously, while Gillen is now the first in Ole Miss history to have qualified in the 5K multiple times. The pair join prior Rebel berths in the 5K outdoors by K.C. Nielsen (1984), Pablo Sierra (1993), Ryan Walling (2016), Cole Bullock (2022) and Gillen last year.

All-American junior Arvesta Troupe punched his first career outdoor ticket to the national meet after taking care of business in Friday's men's high jump qualifying. Troupe – who two weeks ago won SEC silver and became only the second Rebel to ever clear 7-5 – faced no issues today, finishing second overall at 2.18m/7-01.75 to book passage to Eugene.

Troupe was the indoor NCAA bronze medalist this past March, and in two weeks he'll look to become the first Rebel scorer in the high jump outdoors since Olympian Ricky Robertson finished tied for sixth in 2012.

On the women's side, sophomore and World U20 champ Akaoma Odeluga sailed through qualifying in the shot put, finishing second overall at 18.24m/59-10.25. This is Odeluga's third straight national ticket in the shot put, including her second in a row outdoors. She enters ranked second nationally at her career-best 18.93m/62-01.25 from LSU's Battle on the Bayou back in March, and this will be her first competition at Hayward Field since making the shot put final at the U.S. Olympic Trials as a freshman last summer.

Fellow sophomore Mensi Stiff just barely missed the cut for Eugene in 13th place, topping out at 16.54m/54-03.25. Junior Opal Jackson finished 19th in her first regional as a Rebel, tossing an Ole Miss career-best 16.13m/52-11 that moves her to No. 10 in school history outdoors.

Other Rebels in competition on Friday included freshman Lily Beattie in the rescheduled women's pole vault (T-17th, 3.94m/12-11), junior Evan Thornton-Sherman in the men's 5K semifinals (38th, 14:45.46) and junior Carson Turner in the men's 800-meter quarterfinals (21st, 1:49.76).

Ole Miss returns for the final day of action at the NCAA East Regional on Saturday, with competition beginning for the Rebels in the women's triple jump at 1:30 p.m. CT. A full up-to-date timetable is available in our NCAA East Regional preview HERE.
