Men’s Track & Field Punches Four National Tickets in Hammer
5/28/2025 | Track and Field
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Ole Miss men's track & field put together a historic outing at the first day of the 2025 NCAA East Regional, punching a program record four national tickets in the hammer on Wednesday morning to highlight a rain-soaked Day One.
The men's hammer was the lone event to remain on time due to inclement weather that swept into Jacksonville in the early afternoon, and Ole Miss took advantage of that good weather while it lasted. The Rebel men – already ranked as the second-best all-around hammer squad in the NCAA this season – doubled their all-time program total in men's hammer qualifying berths on Wednesday alone after ticket punches by junior Tarik Robinson-O'Hagan, junior Bryson Smith, senior Jake Dalton and junior Mason Hickel.
Robinson-O'Hagan – one of only three athletes nationally this season to have made all seven watch lists for the men's edition of The Bowerman – took down the East Regional record on his top qualifying blast of 74.51m/244-5 in the first round. Prior, no athlete in the history of the East Regional (which began in 2010) had even eclipsed 243 feet. This is Robinson-O'Hagan's third consecutive national berth in the hammer, an event he's scored in twice already as only the second Rebel to ever qualify in the event all-time behind current assistant coach Dempsey McGuigan in 2016 (eighth) and 2017 (10th).
Robinson-O'Hagan was followed by the remainder of the powerful Rebel hammer squad that just two weeks ago scored 23 points at the SEC Championships, the third-most in the event since 2003 and the second consecutive season Ole Miss scored at least 23 in the men's hammer.
Smith punched his first career national ticket on his first throw as well, launching one out to 68.40m/224-5 to finish behind Robinson-O'Hagan. Dalton, the two-time reigning SEC silver medalist in the hammer, secured his second straight national hammer berth in fourth place, topping out on the day in the second round at 67.82m/222-6.
Hickel, meanwhile, unleashed a monster career-best effort in the flight before his teammates and was able to hold on for his first career ticket to the national meet. His second-round effort of 66.05m/216-8 registered as PR of nearly a full meter, and it moved him up to No. 5 in Ole Miss history.
With his performance, four of the top-five hammer performances in school history have all come this season: Robinson-O'Hagan's record 75.72m/248-5 from SECs, Dalton's third-place 69.72m/228-9 from Florida's Tom Jones Memorial, Smith's fourth-place 69.12m/226-9 from the Joe Walker Invite, and now Hickel's fifth-place toss today. McGuigan remains as the No. 2 performer all-time at 70.55m/231-5 from 2017.
Senior Costen Campion concluded his Ole Miss career in the hammer today, finishing 28th at 61.86m/202-11. He ends as a two-time East Region qualifier, a two-time SEC scorer and he leaves ranked fifth all-time in the weight indoors (20.89m/68-06.50) and ninth in the hammer outdoors (64.07m/210-2).
From there, the delays set in. But at roughly 10 p.m. ET, the action on the track resumed – where Ole Miss had entries in three more events: the men's 100-meter dash and 800-meter first rounds, as well as the 10K semifinal.
Junior Joseph Michel – who is also scheduled to run on Ole Miss' 4x100-meter relay on Friday – took care of business, advancing to Friday's quarterfinal after clocking a time qualifier of 10.37 (-0.3).
Not long after in the 800, junior Carson Turner earned a time qualifier of his own after running a career-best 1:47.66 – which leapfrogged him to 12th in Ole Miss history outdoors.
At nearly 1 a.m. ET Thursday, Ole Miss wrapped up the long first day with two in the men's 10K semifinal. Senior Kidus Misgina missed the cut to the national meet by an agonizing six seconds, falling just three spots shy in 15th place at 29:25.03. Junior Aiden Britt, meanwhile, took 39th place at 30:22.48.
Ole Miss will have a quick turnaround, returning to North Florida's Hodges Stadium bright and early at 8 a.m. ET for the women's hammer. The men's pole vault and shot put, which were originally scheduled for Wednesday, have been rescheduled for Thursday. A full up-to-date timetable is available in our NCAA East Regional preview HERE.
