OXFORD, Miss. - Ole Miss and head men's tennis coach Toby Hansson have mutually agreed to part ways, it was announced Monday by Vice Chancellor for Intercollegiate Athletics Keith Carter.
Hansson recently concluded his 11th season as head coach and 19th overall with the program. He guided the Rebels to the NCAA Tournament in each of his first eight eligible seasons as head coach, highlighted by a pair of Sweet 16 appearances.
"We are grateful to Toby for his dedication to Ole Miss Tennis and our student-athletes," said Keith Carter, Ole Miss Vice Chancellor for Intercollegiate Athletics. "For nearly two decades, he worked tirelessly to uphold the proud tradition of our program. We wish him all the best moving forward."
"Ole Miss has played a significant role in both my personal and professional journey, and I'm thankful for the years I spent at the university," Hansson said. "I want to thank Coach Chadwick for bringing me to Oxford back in 2006, and I'm grateful for the opportunity to have led such a storied program. The relationships I've built with student-athletes and staff over the years mean the world to me. This is a special place, and I look forward to watching the program continue to grow in the years to come."
Following an outstanding playing career and a highly-successful eight-year tenure as an assistant and associate head coach to Ole Miss tennis hall of fame coach Billy Chadwick, Hansson took over as the seventh head coach in program history for the 2014-15 campaign.
After reaching the NCAA Tournament second round his first three seasons, Hansson's Rebels broke through in 2018 despite facing major injuries. As a three-seed at the Palo Alto regional, Ole Miss completed one of the biggest upsets in NCAA tennis history over No. 4 Stanford to advance to the Sweet 16, handing the Cardinal its first postseason home loss in 12 years.
Hansson guided the Rebels back to the round of 16 in 2021. With eight ranked victories, Ole Miss concluded the season with a 13-11 overall record and a 7-5 mark in SEC play, earning its first winning league record since 2015. Finn Reynolds and Tim Sandkaulen finished the year ranked as the No. 1 doubles team in the final Oracle/ITA Poll and received All-American recognition. Hansson was voted the Wilson ITA Southern Region Coach of the Year to receive his first individual head coaching award.
Hansson's emphasis on the classroom has helped Ole Miss garner ITA All-Academic Team status in all but one year of his tenure. Twice he coached the SEC men's tennis Scholar-Athlete of the Year, including Lukas Engelhardt who was the 2024 recipient of the H. Boyd McWhorter SEC Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year and was a finalist for the Walter Byers Graduate Scholarship, which is one of the NCAA's highest academic honors.
In Hansson's eight seasons as an assistant and associate head coach, Ole Miss finished among the nation's top 10 four times and the top 15 five times. During that span, the Rebels produced the most All-Americans in the nation with 11 and led the NCAA in that category in 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2012.
A native of Bjärred, Sweden, Hansson helped Ole Miss to its ninth consecutive SEC Western Division title in 2010 en route to ITA Southern Region Assistant Coach of the Year accolades. As a recruiter, Hansson landed 2014 SEC Player of the Year Nik Scholtz, who became the fourth Rebel to earn the honor and the first to be named SEC Freshman and Player of the Year during his career.
