Track & Field’s Robinson-O’Hagan Resets Shot Put Record

2/15/2025 | Track and Field

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Ole Miss track & field junior Tarik Robinson-O'Hagan unleashed a record-breaking throw on his final attempt of the day to lead the Rebels' final day of a busy three-way split weekend at Vanderbilt, Boston University and Arkansas on Saturday.

Robinson-O'Hagan – a member of The Bowerman watch list who entered this week undefeated this season – found himself in unusual territory heading into his sixth and final throw in the invitational section of the shot put at Vanderbilt's Music City Challenge. Robinson-O'Hagan held a comfortable two-foot lead on his third-round heave of 20.55m/67-05.25, when Cincinnati's Fred Moudani Likibi shrank that to less than a foot on his fifth-round effort of 20.32m/66-8.

Moudani Likibi then used his final throw to take a near three-inch lead over Robinson-O'Hagan at 20.62m/67-8. But Robinson-O'Hagan, the reigning NCAA indoor and outdoor shot put champion, reared back on his final attempt and uncorked an overall career-best 21.11m/69-03.25 to take the win – and break his own school record.

His latest heroics today move him into a tie for 21st in collegiate history, and it bests his previous PR of 21.05m/69-00.75 that won him his first NCAA title indoors last March. This season, that toss by Robinson-O'Hagan improves upon his spot as the collegiate leader, as well as his spot as the No. 2 thrower in the United States and No. 7 in the world for 2025.

Combined with his winning weight throw performance of 23.34m/76-2 last night, Robinson-O'Hagan stands alongside North Dakota State's Payton Otterdahl as the lone athletes in collegiate history to break 21 meters in the shot put and 23 in the weight throw within the same meet – with Otterdahl doing so twice in 2019 and Robinson-O'Hagan now twice this season.

Fellow junior Mason Hickel had a career day himself in sixth place, where he improved his spot at No. 5 in the Ole Miss record book indoors on a new PR of 17.87m/58-07.50.

In the women's invite, sophomore Mensi Stiff put together her best shot put performance of the season with a runner-up finish against a stacked field. On her sixth and final attempt as well, Stiff threw a season-best 17.23m/56-06.50, which currently ranks tied for 17th collegiately and today it only trailed Olympian Jessica Ramsey (18.21m/59-9). Former Rebel great Jalani Davis was third at 17.18m/56-04.50, while sophomore Akaoma Odeluga took fourth place at 16.96m/55-07.75.

On the track, Ole Miss received a handful of season-bests in the men's 800-meter at Vanderbilt on Saturday – led by a career-best from sophomore Carson Turner. He finished third overall at 1:48.23, a new PR that moves him into eighth all-time at Ole Miss indoors. Senior Marcus Dropik notched a season-best in sixth place at 1:48.49, with additional season-bests from junior Cade Flatt (15th, 1:50.88) and senior Cole Piotrowski (22nd, 1:52.04).

Other notable performances from Vanderbilt included a PR by sophomore Skylar Soli in the open women's shot put (3rd, 14.38m/47-02.25), a third-place finish by senior Iangelo Atkinstall-Daley in the men's triple jump (15.33m/50-03.50) and a seventh-place finish in the 3K by senior Elyas Ayyoub in his season debut (8:08.17).

At Boston's David Hemery Valentine Invitational, it was the women's turn after a record-breaking night by the Rebel men on Friday. All-American senior newcomer Greta Karinauskaite impressed in her Ole Miss debut in a powerful women's 3K field, finishing 24th overall at 9:08.35 – which already makes her the No. 2 performer in school history. Junior Sophie Baumann notched a season-best in the same heat, finishing 68th overall at 9:22.59.

At Arkansas' Tyson Invitational, senior Samara McConnell led the way for the Rebels in the women's pole vault, finishing sixth at 4.09m/13-5.

Ole Miss will send a small distance delegation to Notre Dame's Alex Wilson Invite next Saturday, Feb. 22, while the remainder of the squad will rest in preparation for the 2025 SEC Indoor Championships, which are set for Feb. 27 to March 1 at Texas A&M.
