OXFORD, Miss. – Ole Miss rifle has been ranked as the No. 6 team in the nation by the Collegiate Rifle Coaches Association, as the organization announced on Tuesday, after a record-setting weekend in Alaska.
The Rebels jumped three spots after claiming four wins over the weekend to boost their record to 8-4 in the season. They became the third-highest ranked team in the PRC with its newest ranking, behind No. 2 Alaska-Fairbanks and No. 5 TCU.
Ole Miss nearly toppled Alaska-Fairbanks after going shot-for-shot with the Nanooks over the weekend but fell two points shy.
Ole Miss put forth a weekend full of historic feats with record-high team and individual marks. Audrey Gogniat, who made her collegiate debut in the spring openers, led the team to a program record smallbore score of 2362 on the second day of competition. The freshman out of Le Noirmont, Switzerland, set the Ole Miss smallbore record after firing 595.
The Rebels stringed together the second-highest aggregate total thanks to its smallbore boost on Sunday. Gogniat, along with fellow freshmen phenoms Gracie Dinh and Jordan de Jesus, guided the Rebels to a 4740-aggregate finish. The day prior, Ole Miss tied the fifth-highest air rifle score in program history.
In total, six individual career-highs occurred over the weekend for Ole Miss' athletes, showing a collective improvement as a team during the winter hiatus. There were 11 finishes in the top three placements in each scoring category, with Gogniat landing No. 1 in five of them over two competitions.
With momentum on their side, the Rebels will take aim for its ninth win of the season at home against No. 13 Memphis on Sunday, Jan. 26. The match is set to begin at 9 a.m. and will take place at the Ole Miss Rifle Range.
