Track & Field Wins 11 Events to Open Season at Ice Breaker
12/6/2024 | Track and Field
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Ole Miss track & field came away with 11 event wins and put together some strong early performances to open the indoor season at Birmingham's Ice Breaker meet on Friday.
Junior and reigning NCAA shot put champion Tarik Robinson-O'Hagan wasted little time establishing his title defense claim, winning his opening competition at 20.30m/66-07.25 – the furthest by a collegian in the month of December in available records since at least 2008. Three of his four legal throws on Friday broke the 20-meter barrier, and his winning mark in the fifth round puts him atop the NCAA list at this early point of the indoor campaign.
Fellow junior Mason Hickel had a strong outing as well as the runner-up, tossing an overall PR 17.85m/58-06.75 that ranks him No. 5 in Ole Miss history indoors.
Later in the weight throw, Robinson-O'Hagan led a powerful group of Rebels that each broke 65 feet en route to taking the top five spots. Robinson-O'Hagan won at 22.88m/75-00.75, the best mark by a collegian in December since 2020. Friday's opening performances set the stage for Robinson-O'Hagan in 2025, who already ranks as the third-best combination shot put/weight throw performer in collegiate history behind North Dakota State's Payton Otterdahl and Ohio State's Dan Taylor.
Junior Bryson Smith had an excellent day as the runner-up, smashing a five-foot PR at 21.16m/69-05.25 to move behind Robinson-O'Hagan in second all-time at Ole Miss. Behind Smith on Friday were Costen Campion (third, 20.51m/67-03.50), Mason Hickel (fourth, 20.25m/66-05.25) and Jake Dalton (fifth, 19.99m/65-7; PR, No. 10 Ole Miss history).
Sophomore Akaoma Odeluga led the Rebel throwers on the women's side of things in her first competition since winning the World U20 gold medal in the shot put this past August. Odeluga's first trip back to the shot put ring proved victorious again Friday at a five-foot indoor PR of 17.60m/57-9, which pushes her to No. 4 in school history.
Odeluga was also the top collegiate finisher in the weight throw behind former Rebel NCAA Champions Janeah Stewart (23.84m/78-02.75) and Jalani Davis (23.14m/75-11), taking third at a nine-foot improvement to 20.88m/68-6 (No. 7 Ole Miss history). As a freshman in 2024, Odeluga never broke 60 feet in the weight, but on Friday she didn't have a single throw below the 63-foot threshold.
Fellow sophomore Skylar Soli finished in fourth place right behind Odeluga at 19.57m/64-02.50.
Ole Miss received two dominant performances across both editions of the pole vault, including a superb pair of debut performances by freshmen Katie McFarland and Lily Beattie in the women's competition.
McFarland and Beattie were both clean through each of their first three bars of collegiate competition, with McFarland sealing victory by remaining clean over a fourth bar at 4.00m/13-01.50 (No. 9 Ole Miss history). Senior Samara McConnell cleared the same height but took second on total misses, while Beattie was third at 3.85m/12-07.50 – good for No. 12 in the Rebel record books indoors.
Sophomore Mary Cate Doughty recorded an indoor PR as well in fourth place at 3.70m/12-01.50, moving her to No. 14 all-time at Ole Miss.
On the men's side, junior Logan Kelley won at a strong season-opening clearance of 5.20m/17-00.75. Sophomore transfer and Oxford native John Kendricks was the runner-up and senior Ford Maberry was third at the same height of 4.85m/15-11, putting them into a tie for 14th in the Ole Miss records.
Other wins in the field included a 1-2 finish in the men's triple jump by senior (and returning NCAA Outdoor qualifier) Iangelo Atkinstall-Daley (15.05m/49-04.50) and senior Gavin Nembhard (14.82m/48-07.50; indoor PR).
On the track, Ole Miss received a pair of victories from sophomore Connor Henson in the men's 1000-meter (2:28.26) and men's 3K (8:21.13), a win from Hannah Ielfield in the women's 3K (9:52.41; PR), and a 1-2 finish in the men's 800-meter by freshman Max Armstrong (1:49.65; No. 14 Ole Miss history) and sophomore Jonathan Stock (1:51.79; indoor PR).
The Rebels closed the day with a victory in the men's 4x400-meter relay. The freshman quartet of Jordan Urrutia, Wesley Todd, Caughran Fowler and Max Armstrong passed the stick in 3:14.88 to seal the win.
Ole Miss will return to competition on Jan. 10-11, when the Rebels will split for the Rod McCravy Invitational in Louisville and the Commodore Challenge at Vanderbilt.
