Rebels Back on Track with Win over Texas A&M, 74-54

2/17/2022 | Women's Basketball

OXFORD, Miss. – 10 Rebels made their way to the basket Thursday night as Ole Miss went on to earn its second win this season over Texas A&M, 74-54 from the SJB Pavilion. The win marks the first regular season sweep over the Aggies in program history and its largest margin of victory against Texas A&M.

Ole Miss (19-6, 7-5 SEC) found its way back to its brand of tough, defensive basketball while also having a little fun at the other end of the floor to hold off Texas A&M (14-11, 4-9 SEC), as the Rebels never trailed Thursday night.

It was a monumental occasion as well as Shakira Austin grabbed her 1,000th career rebound and head coach Yolett McPhee-McCuin earned her 50th win at Ole Miss.

Leading all scorers tying a season-high 19 points was Lashonda Monk, as the guard also grabbed a season-high seven rebounds. Madison Scott joined Monk in double-figures with 13 points and 14 rebounds for her fourth double-double on the year. With her 18th game in double figures was Austin with 12 points, scoring 10 in the second half.

Dropping dimes was Mimi Reid, as the redshirt-senior ended the night with nine points and an SEC-best six assists.

Scott came out of the gates ready to play with back-to-back buckets, as the team hit four of its first five shots. The Rebels started off absolutely dominant on the boards, outrebounding the Aggies 10 to one midway through the first en route to a 16-12 lead through 10.

Ole Miss capitalized off its strong play on the boards, to begin to take charge. Three straight field goals on a 6-0 run, assisted the Rebels to go up by a dozen at 26-14. While the Rebels kept finding the basket, they limited the Aggies from getting close to it, holding them scoreless for over half the second quarter. Ole Miss began to find its footing from three, with three triples from three different Rebels to carry a 35-19 lead into the half. Shutting down the Aggies on offense, Ole Miss held A&M to its fewest amount of points in a first half this season.

The Aggies strung together a 7-0 run in the third to cut into the Ole Miss lead at 45-29, yet multiple Rebels got in on the action to cushion their advantage. Freshman Jaiyah Harris-Smith found herself in the mix with her second collegiate basket with an SEC-high seven minutes on the floor.

The pressure was on as Texas A&M refused to let up, closing the gap to 10 with seven minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. Monk remained a huge factor for Ole Miss, as the Rebels utilized a stretch hitting 5-of-7 shots to pad its lead. Reid's second triple of the night on a 7-0 run served as the exclamation point on a 74-54 victory.

Ole Miss begins a busy stretch with three games in five days by heading to the Music City to face off against Vanderbilt on Sunday (Feb. 20). Tip time against the Commodores is set for 2 p.m. CT on SEC Network +.
