Shakira Austin Named Preseason Second-Team All-SEC

Ole Miss Picked 11th in Preseason Coaches Poll
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Ole Miss women's basketball junior Shakira Austin has been named to the preseason second-team All-SEC team by the conference on Tuesday morning. Additionally, the Rebels were picked to finish 11th overall in the preseason coaches poll.
Austin, who just last week was named as one of 20 on the preseason Lisa Leslie Award Watch List, was ESPN's No. 1 rated transfer this offseason after coming to Ole Miss from Maryland this past spring and being ruled immediately eligible to play on Oct. 29. At Maryland, Austin played a significant role in two Big Ten championship runs in 2019 and 2020, playing in 66 games and starting 47 with the Terrapins, who went a combined 57-9 in that stretch.
Along the way, the former No. 3 national high school prospect and McDonald's All-American broke Maryland's single-season blocks record with 89 her freshman season and was named Second-Team All-Big Ten her sophomore season. In two seasons at Maryland, Austin averaged 10.1 points. 8.2 rebounds and 2.0 blocks per game while shooting 47.2 percent overall. She also has 15 career double-doubles and has had multiple blocks in 26 total games.
Ole Miss opens the season next Wednesday (Nov. 25) at home vs. Northwestern State.
