Ole Miss Remains Home Sunday vs. Alabama
OXFORD, Miss. – No. 1 South Carolina proved why it deserves the top ranking in the nation, taking control from the jump as Ole Miss lost, 87-32, at The Pavilion on Thursday night.
The top-ranked Gamecocks (20-1, 8-0 SEC) were efficient all-around, shooting 53.2 percent overall and 62.5 percent from three while stifling the Rebel offense to just 26 percent shooting on the night. South Carolina entered with the nation's third-best scoring margin, winning games this year by an average of 26.3 points per game. The Gamecocks also entered as the NCAA leader in shot blocks, and tonight they blocked an Ole Miss opponent season-high seven shots.
"Hats off to South Carolina," said Ole Miss head coach Yolett McPhee-McCuin. "To me, they are the new UConn of this age. I thought there was a fear factor that they put in immediately. That's why they are number one. I thought they played a complete game, and I expect them to do well as far as they go."
Ole Miss (7-14, 0-8 SEC) started to come to life offensively in the second half, shooting 40 percent from the field, but could do little to overcome a slow first half in which the Gamecock defense held the Rebels to just two points. Mimi Reid led Ole Miss with 12 points, 10 of which came in the back half. The Gamecocks, meanwhile, were led by Laeticia Amihere (16 points, three blocks, one rebound, one steal), Mikiah Herbert Harrigan (10 points, four rebounds, two blocks, two steals) and Tyasha Harris (10 points, five rebounds, two assists, two steals).
Ole Miss remains at home to host Alabama (12-9, 2-6 SEC) this Sunday, with tipoff set for 2 p.m. CT at The Pavilion.
