OXFORD, Miss. - The Ole Miss women's basketball team used eight fourth-quarter points from Taylor Manuel (St. Louis, Mo.) and a double-double from Shandricka Sessom (Byhalia, Miss.) to pick up a 68-50 win over Jacksonville State on Thursday night.
Ole Miss (3-0) opened the fourth quarter with a 5-0 run to pull ahead, but the story of the fourth quarter was the emergence of Manuel. With just three points entering the final stanza, Manuel went off for eight points and Ole Miss held the Gamecocks to just seven points while rattling off 22 fourth-quarter points en route to their third straight win.
The Rebels found themselves in a battle in the third quarter, but sparked by a triple from Sessom late Ole Miss used a 17-2 run to pull away. The Rebels shot 41.1 percent (23-of-56), but shot an astounding 57.1 (8-of-14) percent in the fourth led by Manuel.
Trailing at halftime for the first time this season, Ole Miss came out with some momentum in the third quarter and with early buckets from Erika Sisk (Oxford, Miss.) and Sessom Ole Miss tied the game at 34 before a triple from Madinah Muhammad (Chicago, Ill.) gave the lead back to the Rebels. In a quarter in which the score went back-and-forth between the teams, Ole Miss closed the quarter with a bucket from Muhammad, which sparked Ole Miss' fourth quarter run.
Shequila Joseph (London, England) got the scoring started with a triple - her third consecutive game with a three-pointer - and scored the first five points of the game as Ole Miss jumped out to a 8-1 lead at the media timeout, while holding the Gamecocks without a field goal. JSU posted their first field goal at the 3:51 mark of the first quarter and cut the lead to just two points, but right on cue Joseph nailed a triple to keep the lead with the home team as Ole Miss closed the quarter with the last four points.
The second quarter was full of momentum shifts as the Gamecocks scored 22 second-quarter points and took their first lead of the game at the 3:19 mark. The Rebels were able to respond with a bucket from Bretta Hart (Poplarville, Miss.) to keep the lead with the home team. JSU took a five-point lead before a jumper from Shandricka Sessom cut the JSU lead to two points, 29-27, at halftime.
From The Head Coach
On the win...
"We had to fight for this one. It's good when you're in a fight and it's not just a blowout. We found a way to win. That's a good basketball team we just played. They have a good chance at winning the Ohio Valley Conference. We found a way to get it there at the end, and I'm proud of our team."
On the comeback...
"We just kept playing passive, and I had to get on them at halftime, and they responded, came out the second half and played. It's good to do that and have a little adversity. It's a big game for us to get a win. They just almost beat Florida State, the No. 12 team in the country."
"First half we got to playing a little one-on-one ball. That's not what we need to do. We got to sharing the ball in the second half. Total team effort."
"I kept telling them in the huddle, 'we've got to get back to playing our ball. We can't be individuals. We have to execute offensively, and if we do that, we'll get it.' And you saw, when the ball goes into (Taylor) Manuel, something good happens. That's our ticket. We've got to go in there to her."
On Shequila Joseph...
"Shequila Joseph, player of the game. She played her butt off the whole night. I'm real proud of her. She kept us in it there in the first half when we had nothing else going."
