Ole Miss Drops Road Contest at LSU

BATON ROUGE, La. -- Birthday girl Danielle McCray (West Palm Beach, Fla.) was a bright spot in what amounted to a tough shooting night for the Ole Miss women's basketball team in a 70-41 loss at LSU. McCray posted 15 points and was a rebound shy of her third career double-double with nine rebounds to lead Ole Miss.
McCray was the lone player in double figures but Shandricka Sessom (Byhalia .Miss.) added eight points while Tia Faleru (Ozark, Ala.) and Bretta Hart (Poplarville, Miss.) each grabbed seven rebounds. The Rebels had a tough shooting night going 13-of-56 (.232) and was held to a season-low 41 points which was sixth lowest in program history and the fewest points in the Matt Insell era. Ole Miss struggled with turnovers posting a season-high 30 turnovers, which led to an 34 points for LSU.
Ole Miss' (14-7, 4-4 SEC) problems continued in the second half as it seemed as if the basket had a lid on it, as the Rebels opened with a free throw from McCray at the 19:40 mark, but went nearly four minutes without another basket while the Lady Tigers extended its lead to 43-20 -- the largest of the night at the first media timeout of the half.
Tia Faleru (Ozark, Ala.) ended the scoring drought with a bucket inside, but Ole Miss couldn't seem to get anything going on the offensive end closing the game with a season-low goal percentage as LSU picked up the win, sending Ole Miss to its third straight loss.
The Rebels got off to a slow start, allowing the home team to jump out to a 6-2 lead before picking it up on the defensive end at the first media timeout with a bucket from A'Queen Hayes (Horn Lake, Miss.) and LSU turnover giving LSU one possession lead the first media timeout.
The first half was a characterized by Ole Miss turnovers, LSU scored 9 of its first 13 points off Rebel miscues and poor shooting. The Rebels shot just 16.2 percent in the first half and had just 19 first half points, its fewest first half points since the scoring 19 against Baylor back on Dec. 7.
