OXFORD, Miss. - Meghan Bolger, who served as an assistant coach for the Lady Rebel golf program the past year, has been promoted to head coach, Ole Miss Athletics Director John Shafer announced Monday. Bolger replaces Keil Purdom, who resigned as head coach in June after directing the Ole Miss women's golf team the last 10 seasons.
"We're excited about Meghan being named the women's golf head coach at Ole Miss," said Shafer. "She has proven that she has the qualities to be a successful head coach in the Southeastern Conference.
"Because of the recent success our women's team has enjoyed, we thought it was important to have some continuity so the program would not miss a beat. Meghan knows the young women in the program and the signees who are joining the team this year. We felt that it was a great opportunity for her and us."
The Haddonfield, N.J., native joined the Lady Rebel golf staff last August as an assistant coach after a stellar collegiate career at Tulane University from 1997-2000. In her first year with the Lady Rebels in 2000-01, Bolger helped guide Ole Miss to four top-10 finishes and a third-place showing at the Lady Rebel Intercollegiate. Three Lady Rebel golfers also were named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll.
"To continue to be a part of Ole Miss is a wonderful opportunity for me," Bolger said. "Ole Miss is a great university with a strong athletics tradition. I'm ready for the challenge, and I'm eager to get the young ladies back on campus and begin playing."
A four-year letterwinner at Tulane, Bolger was a three-time All-Conference USA selection. As a player, she compiled six top-10 finishes and participated in the 2000 NCAA Regional, placing among the top 25 individuals. Bolger won the 1999 and 2000 Philadelphia (Pa.) Women's Amateur and played in the 2000 U.S. Women's Amateur in Portland, Ore. She will defend her Philadelphia Women's Amateur title this week.
"Meghan was a fantastic addition to our women's golf program when she was hired as an assistant coach last year," said Lynnette Johnson, Ole Miss Associate Athletics Director/Senior Women's Administrator. "She is the right person for the University of Mississippi. Meghan is a quality individual who has a tremendous amount of integrity and is well-respected in her profession. She knows the game of golf, and Meghan will continue to build on the success our program has had."
