Ole Miss Men's Golf Prepares For NCAA Championships

OXFORD, Miss.-- The Ole Miss men's golf team is preparing to play in the 2001 NCAA Championships at the Duke University Golf Club beginning Wednesday. The Rebels defeated Duke in a one-hole playoff at the NCAA East Regional to advance to the NCAA Championships.

This marks the second time in three years that the Rebels have advanced to the NCAA Championships. This marks the fourth time overall that Ole Miss has played in the NCAA Championships. The Rebels have made the NCAA Championship field in 1984, 1985, 1999, and 2001.

"This is what we have worked for all year," said Ole Miss golf coach Woody Cowart. "We did what we had to get here in the Regional, now it's time to play against the best in the country. We are ready to get out there and play."

The tournament field includes: East Tennessee State, Kent State, Arizona State, Oklahoma, Arizona, North Carolina State, UC-Irvine, Florida, Purdue, Clemson, Minnesota, Pacific, College of Charleston, South Carolina, Georgia, Oregon State, Virginia Tech, Oklahoma State, Georgia Tech, Augusta State, Stanford, Toledo, UCLA, Georgia Southern, Wake Forest, UAB, SMU, Ole Miss, Houston, and Washington.

The Ole Miss lineup will include Troy Muller, Andrew Medley, Phil Caravia, J.J. Thompson, and Tommy Clement. Muller, a senior from Braithwaite, La., leads the Rebels with a 73.06 stroke average in 12 tournaments this season. Medley, a sophomore from Jackson, Miss., was the only Rebel golfer to compete in all 13 tournaments. He averaged 73.27 in 38 rounds played in 2000-01.

Caravia, a senior from Belleville, Ill., led the Rebels at the 2001 NCAA East Regional with a eighth place finish. He had a 54-hole total of 73-68-68--209. Thompson, a junior college transfer from Minot, N.D., averaged 73.58 in nine tournaments in 2000-01. Clement, a junior from Mobile, Ala., averaged 74.27 in nine events this season.

First round play is scheduled for Wednesday, while second round play is slated for Thursday. After the second round, the top 15 teams will advance to play in the third and fourth rounds scheduled for Friday and Saturday.
