SPRINGFIELD, N.J. - Ole Miss golfers Phil Caravia and J.J. Thompson missed the cut Tuesday for match-play at the U.S. Amateur Championship at Baltusrol Golf Club. Caravia finishes with a 73-77--150, while Thompson closes with a 80-75--155.

Jim Salinetti of Lee, Mass., and Jeff Wilson of Suisin, Calif., each shot 4-under-par 36-hole totals of 137 Tuesday to share medalist honors. Salinetti was the only player to break par each day.

Play continues Wednesday with the first round of match play for the 64 low scorers. The Championship runs through Sunday's 36-hole final. The oldest national championship conducted by the USGA, the U.S. Amateur is celebrating its 100th playing this year.

Caravia, a senior from Belleville, Ill., made his second appearance in the U.S. Amateur, shooting a 78-67--154 a year ago. A three-year letterman for the Rebels, Caravia has missed only one tournament over the past two years, and last season finished fifth on the squad in stroke average. He is also a 2000 Scholastic All-America.

Thompson is beginning his first season with the Ole Miss golf team. A junior from Minot, N.D., Thompson has spent the last two years at Scottsdale Community College in Scottsdale, Ariz., where he earned juco All-America honors each season.

The Rebel golfers begin their quest for a third straight NCAA Tournament appearance Oct. 3-4 at the Adam's Cup Collegiate in Newport, R.I.
